A former professional rugby player says he has grown as a leader and as a person thanks to his time studying with Capable NZ.

Jacques Nieuwenhuis has played professional rugby in South Africa and now works as a Branch Manager for Viridian Glass in Cromwell, Central Otago. He recently completed his Bachelor of Applied Management through Capable NZ.

Jacques was looking to grow as a leader and be more effective as an employee and manager when he came across Capable NZ. He says the programme has improved his outlook and understanding of leadership.

“It has assisted me to become a more effective manager and a better person overall. I can now confidently apply all my learnings in real-life situations and be certain of an improved outcome or result,” says Jacques.

Jacques chose Capable because its flexibility allowed him to fit study around his full-time professional role and family life.

“Having the opportunity to work with a world-class facilitator was also one of the main reasons for studying at Capable NZ. Having a facilitator available to constantly assist me with answers and directions as well as holding me accountable to produce quality work was a major drawcard for me.”

Jacques says he was always confident as a leader and in his management style, but the degree opened up so many more possibilities and avenues to grow.

“Capable NZ assisted me in realising that I can be so much more.”

The programme also equipped him to better handle any situation he might face and lead more confidently in any situation, he says.

“Upon completing this course, I recognised the leadership style that fit me and enhanced the qualities I already possessed to be a more complete leader.

Jacque says the programme has also allowed him to help his employees grow.

“The Capable NZ model taught me how to value people, to look for ways to empower those around me, and strive to create a sustainable future for all,” says Jacques.

He’s had the opportunity to transfer the knowledge he has gained to his staff and has witnessed amazing change and growth in them professionally and personally.

Jacques recommends Capable NZ to any others thinking of upskilling.

“This is the perfect place to start, whether you’re a first-time learner or an experienced student. Capable NZ will assist you to become a better leader, and a better person and serve the community better. This experience rates as one of the highlights of my professional career.”

He’s even considering completing the Master of Professional Practice through Capable NZ in the future.

“I am certain that with Capable NZ I can further grow as a leader and have a greater impact in my community.
