Is a Capable NZ qualification the same as a university qualification?
Yes, all our programmes are equivalent to a university qualification, and are internationally recognised by NZQA.
Do I need to purchase text books?
No. Learners have access to resources available through the Robertson Library.
How much experience do I need to meet the entry requirements?
Each programme has different entry requirements, please refer to the programme page for the course you’re interested in. Then, get in touch for a chat.
I struggled at school; how can I complete a university level qualification?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Many of our graduates were in the same situation. Your facilitator will support you to develop the necessary skills in academic theory, writing and referencing. You will also have access to Otago Polytechnic’s Student Success Support Services.
How does Capable NZ make it possible to fast-track my qualification?
We recognise and value your previous life and work experience. Once you have proven your relevant knowledge, you won’t need to re-do this learning, as you would in a typical three-year degree, for example. Qualifications earned through Capable NZ have the same value as those earned through normal Otago Polytechnic programmes, or other tertiary institutions.
Do I have to leave my job to study through Capable NZ?
No, you don’t have to! You can work and study at the same time. Our independent learning model means the process is flexible, and you can even complete some of your required work on the job.
What will my facilitator do?
Our experienced and supportive facilitators will work with you to fill in any gaps in your learning and help you achieve your qualification. All learners enjoy one-on-one support from their own dedicated facilitator as they reflect in and on their learning from the skills and knowledge gained from their experience.
Our facilitators come from a pool of over 25 highly experienced and passionate educators. They represent a wide range of backgrounds (including tikanga Māori) and academic expertise. Once we find out a bit about you, we will match you to the facilitator that is most suited to your needs, taking your preferences into account.
Can I choose the subjects I study within the course I am doing?
Usually yes, your facilitator will be able to advise you what is suitable. For example, if you are studying towards a management degree then there is plenty of scope to discuss various management practices, or if you are working towards a professional practice qualification, then you can choose subjects relevant to your own practice as a learner. Some programmes include optional specialities.
Can my recognition of prior learning include previous qualifications?
Yes, it can. All your previous qualifications are recognised in the enrolment review process. For example, if you have a Diploma of Civil Engineering, then you can use this towards your Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil), through Capable NZ.
What types of things can I use for my case studies?
You can use examples of workplace learnings and practices along with smaller vignettes about examples of practice. These could include an ethical issue, dealing with staff performance, running a session with staff on strategic planning, project managing a build, or working with a client.
Do I have to sit an exam?
No, you don’t! Instead, you will develop a minimum of two case studies. Your facilitator will support you to present a portfolio of evidence at the end of your programme to the Academic Panel.
How can I use my experience towards a qualification?
We measure your existing skills, knowledge and capabilities against a formal qualification and give you academic credit for what you already know. You will then work with your facilitator to create a portfolio of your experience, using a reflective learning process. You will create a series of case studies (a minimum of two) with a focus on meeting the graduate profile of your intended qualification.
How does Capable NZ work?
Once you have contacted us, we will assign you a dedicated facilitator. They will assess your existing experience. You will then be supported to document your experience and fill in gaps in your knowledge. Once we agree you are ready, we will support you to present a portfolio of evidence to the Academic Panel. You’ll be graduating with your well-deserved NZQA qualification before you know it! For more information see our How it works page.
How long will it take to complete my qualification?
This depends on what programme you are enrolled in, and how much relevant experience you have already got. Please refer to the programme page for the course you are interested in, and then contact us for more information.
How many hours a week will I need to spend working towards my qualification?
Up to 20 hours per week full time or 10 hours per week part time. You can potentially complete some of these hours while you are at work.
Capable NZ uses a self-directed study model so the amount of time may vary based on your individual learning style.
If I decide to study part time, can I then choose to complete my qualification quicker?
Yes, you can. Your facilitator will be able to advise you on how to do this and if they recommend this option for your programme.
How do I pick the correct study area?
It depends on your aspirations and previous experience. Have a look at our programmes, then contact us with your CV and we can help you decide.
When can I start?
Pick a time that suits you! We take new learners at the beginning of each month.
Can I get a study link allowance or a student loan if I am enrolled part time?
Possibly. Please refer to the Studylink website.
Am I eligible for Fees Free?
You can apply for fees free if you have not studied 60 credits or more at a tertiary level before. If you are accepted to a Graduate Diploma or Master’s degree based on your work experience, you can still apply for Fees Free if it is your first year of tertiary study.
To apply go to: www.feesfree.govt.nz. You will need a National Student Number (NSN), if you do not have one, we can create one for you.
How much will it cost?
Fees are listed on the programme page for the study area you are interested in. The fee listed is a yearly cost. The amount you pay will depend on how long you need to study, which is calculated based on your existing experience. Ask your facilitator for more information relating to your personal situation. Fees can either be paid in one lump sum or by student loan if eligible. You may be eligible to pay for your fees via StudyLink.
People take different lengths of time to complete their qualifications. Ask your facilitator for more information relating to your personal situation.
