Phillip Armstrong used his Capable NZ qualification to bring together his practical industry experience and health and safety knowledge to improve efforts to reduce worker harm.
He chose to study at Capable NZ because he wanted a programme that recognised his existing skills and experience, while also providing practical, work-based learning opportunities to advance his professional growth.
Phillip originally worked in the field as an electrical Line Mechanic. He’s now a Senior Health, Safety, and Environment Advisor at Omexom and uses his practical work experience to help reduce worker harm rates.
“The electrical industry is heavily regulated with a lot of training and competency requirements. I have always had a passion for people and their wellbeing, so I naturally transitioned to a health and safety practitioner role within the electrical industry.”
A key component of his Capable NZ studies involved analysing organisational worker harm statistics and identifying lagging indicators in collaboration with the health and safety team.
“My study looked at a variety of New Zealand worker harm statistics and the maturity of the safety cultures embedded in workplaces. The research has made me reflect on past workplace tragedies and the key failings which led to serious harm or loss of life.”
His research has fostered robust discussions and collective problem-solving to enhance efforts toward worker harm reduction.
A memorable moment in his study was when his organisation’s head of health and safety came to New Zealand from France and saw his project at the worksite.
“He took photos to share with his colleagues back in France.”
The greatest highlight of his Capable NZ journey was achieving a grade of distinction.
Phillip says his Capable NZ experience was truly accommodating to his busy schedule. The flexibility provided by part-time study enabled him to successfully balance academic coursework with the demands of a dynamic health and safety role.
Although he didn’t complete high school and came to tertiary education later in life, Phillip’s personal and professional experiences significantly facilitated his learning process.
He doubted his abilities at first but gained self-confidence through his studies.
“With determination and perseverance, success is attainable. I encourage others not to hesitate - begin your journey today.”
Phillip says his experience in the Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice programme has given him valuable insights into academic achievement and career pathways. He’s now seeking to pursue a master’s degree in Professional Practice.
