Mahendra Devkota says his study experience with Capable NZ has been practical, reflective, and empowering.
Mahendra chose Capable NZ because it offered a pathway to earn a recognised qualification while continuing to work full-time.
“The work-based learning model really appealed to me, as it allowed me to reflect on and strengthen what I was already doing in my role,” he says.
Mahendra has worked in hospitality and service operations for more than 20 years. This includes senior roles in operations management, training, compliance, and customer service, as well as managing multiple café and airport food and beverage outlets in New Zealand and overseas.
He describes his Capable NZ study experience as “practical, reflective, and empowering”. He says his course facilitator Alexa Forbes was always readily available to support him.
“One of the biggest highlights was developing my own framework of practice,” says Mahendra.
He also appreciated the focus on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ethics, and sustainability (social sustainability).
“These are areas that have become more central to my leadership. It was rewarding to connect academic concepts to real-life team situations.”
Mahendra says he was able to apply what he was learning directly into the workplace, whether that was improving standard operating procedures, developing a training system, or lifting team performance.
His study also gave him space to reflect more deeply on how he leads and where improvements could be made.
“I’ve become more strategic and self-aware as a leader. Personally, I feel more grounded in my values and more confident in how I lead people. Professionally, I’ve strengthened my understanding of bicultural practice, team development, and how to align operational practice with organisational goals.”
Mahendra is now aiming to move into senior leadership roles that focus on people, capability, and service delivery, particularly in the public or social sector. He’s also open to further study in leadership, including Māori leadership and Te Ao Māori, as well as organisational development.
Mahendra recommends Capable NZ to anyone looking to turn their experience into a recognised qualification.
“It’s practical, flexible, and respectful of the knowledge you already have,” he says.
“Give it a go. You’ll be surprised how much you already know and how valuable your experience is. The Capable NZ model helps you structure that learning in a way that builds your confidence and enhances your career.”
