Kelly Rose says completing her Capable NZ degree gave her confidence and practical tools to enhance her work supporting students into careers.

“I wanted to continue my professional development in a way that recognised the experience I’ve already built,” says Kelly.

Capable NZ’s model appealed to her because it was flexible, reflective, and directly connected to her day-to-day work at Long Bay College, she says.

Its work-based learning model allowed Kelly to apply her studies immediately in her role as Gateway / STAR / Work Experience Coordinator. She was fortunate to be able to have Career Practice as her area of focus, which aligned perfectly with her role.

“I was able to develop more structured and inclusive approaches to supporting students, particularly neurodivergent learners, which strengthened the Gateway programme.”

It also helped her explore solutions to daily challenges, improve processes, and incorporate reflective practices into her work.

“Overall, the programme gave me practical tools and insights that positively influenced how I support students and approach my role, and I hope these benefits have also had a positive impact on the school.”

Kelly says she didn’t have a Careers Advisor to guide her when she left high school. Successfully completing the Capable programme, especially passing with Distinction, has done wonders for how she sees herself and her capabilities.

“I’ve become more reflective, empathetic, and intentional in how I support young people.”

She’s also strengthened her ability to integrate theory with practice, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes for students.

“This experience has also deepened my belief in lifelong learning. Working with students now feels personal. I try to be the person I needed when I was their age, helping them see their potential even when they can’t yet see it themselves.”

Kelly says having Dr Glenys Ker as her mentor and facilitator was a privilege.

“She’s knowledgeable, encouraging, and patient, always guiding me thoughtfully through the process.

Kelly also appreciated the chance to reflect on the influence of her support network -  her husband, daughter, parents, boss, and friends - who motivated and inspired her throughout her study.

Kelly says Capable NZ is a brilliant option for anyone wanting to develop their practice while continuing to work.

“Capable NZ values your lived and work experience, challenges you to reflect deeply, and supports growth in both personal and professional ways.”

“Trust the process and don’t underestimate the value of the work you’ve already done. This programme gives you the space to reflect, refine, and grow — and you’ll be surprised by how much you’ve achieved and how much more you’re capable of.”
