New Zealand Diploma in Brewing (Level 6)

Are you a brewer with significant skills and experience?

If so, you could be assessed for this qualification via our Independent Learning Pathway process. Completion of this six-month Diploma will demonstrate that you have the skills and specialised knowledge to develop and independently brew to a professional level in a commercial or non-commercial environment.

 

What's an Independent Learning Pathway?
Our Independent Learning Pathway (ILP) process measures your experiential learning, skills and knowledge against a NZQA-recognised qualification.  Generally, the more experienced you are, the more likely it is that you will take this direct route to achieving your desired qualification.   

A skilled facilitator will help you explore your own experiential learning, taking a holistic, integrated view of the expected outcomes in the graduate profile of this qualification. During this innovative process, you will identify, demonstrate, articulate and reflect upon the understanding and skills you have developed through your work and other relevant learning experiences.  

 

Who is this qualification for?

This programme is for brewers who have developed specialised skills and knowledge, are able to demonstrate leadership in the workplace and contribute to innovation within the brewing industry.  Graduate will be able to operate with broad responsibility across a range of contexts.  Usually applicants are in current, relevant employment and working in a brewery or cider brew house. 

 

What will I achieve through this qualification?  

Graduates will be self-aware, motivated, flexible and an evidence-informed brewer.

You will:

  • grow in understanding of your general management and leadership practice
  • be able to contribute to the development of new knowledge and to your profession 
  • demonstrate the ability to apply specialised technical knowledge and skills in brewing, as well as a broad range of applicable business skills, and principles and practices, including safety in the work environment
  • demonstrate well-developed critical thinking capabilities
  • employ creative skills and apply them in an organised approach to problem-solving 
  • demonstrate a regard for social responsibility and sustainable practice, as well as an awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in your own business context.  
  • develop the ability to be an effective communicator which will enable you to initiate, inspire, guide and reward the work of others
  • be self-directed, working effectively as a learner, and have developed a cohesive, integrated model of practice inclusive of professional standards and reflective practice.

What are the entry requirements? 

  • New Zealand Certificate in Brewing (Level 5) OR equivalent skills and knowledge.
  • For applicants 20 years of age and over, there are no minimum academic requirements.
  • In exceptional circumstances, an applicant under the age of 20 years who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme where they supply evidence of their ability to succeed on the programme.
  • Other requirements: Learners who will be aged under 18 during activities that require the tasting of alcohol will not be allowed to participate in this activity without first producing a signed guardian consent form.

To successfully enter this qualification, you will have (at least):

  • significant experience working in a large brewing facility, and 
  • experience in all aspects of the brewing process which may include (but is not limited to):
    • managing all aspects of the brewing process
    • carrying out all routine laboratory practices 
    • interpreting and problem solving as issues arise 
    • the use of all standard brewery equipment 
    • management of staff (more than four) throughout the brewing process
    • in-depth understanding of New Zealand legislation as it pertains to Brewing, Excise, Food Safety, Health and Safety, and Export compliance.
